Of the sand.

Au Sable — "of the sand." The language of early explorers mapping territory that would become Michigan.
Ojibwe
Zaabiing — the river that flows out. The indigenous name for the same river, spoken by the people who knew it first.

The Au Sable River runs through Oscoda, Michigan — where this family was stationed during formative years — and where the connection to service, military community, and the meaning of home took hold.
